A Prayerful Life:
How to Pray and What to Ask For

Prayer is the way the heart speaks to God. It sounds a lot like a conversation with your best friend who loves and cares deeply for your well-being. Some religions and spiritual paths prescribe a way to pray. What is most important is the willingness to turn towards the Lord with a full heart. Whether you are on your knees, bow your head, prostrate, raise your hands to the heavens, God hears your prayers. Whether you whisper, remain silent or shout, God hears your prayers. There is nothing outside of God. This divine unconditional love receives your celebration, gratitude, thanks and praise right along with your fear, anxiety, anger, disappointments and difficulties.

Prayer tests us to believe that there is a power greater than ourselves. Believers and nonbelievers turn to this great mystery in times of trouble. This is when we are closest to God, when we are humbled by not having the answers. When we feel alone, scared or angry, when we have no place else to turn, we turn to God as a savior. One’s faith is tested when prayers are seemingly not answered and one is left to trust and surrender completely to the divine grace of the great mystery. In time, all will be revealed. A Nigerian proverb says: “What you don’t know will not cause you harm or take your life.”

Jesus taught his disciples to pray by using The Lord’s Prayer. His model guides our thoughts to God:
• Offer thanks and gratitude to the Lord,
• Ask the Lord to forgive as you would forgive others,
• Protect and keep us safe, guiding our actions and thoughts, and
• Grow in faith, surrender and welcome God’s love in your life.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, Make me an instrument of your Peace;
Where there is hared, let me sow Love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where is doubt, faith;
Where is despair, hope;
Where is darkness, light;
Where is sadness, joy.
Oh divine master, grant that
I may not so much seek to
Be consoled as to console;
To be understood
As to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving
That we receive;
It is in pardoning
That we are pardoned: and it is in dying
That we are born to eternal life.
Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Jesus Christ’s Sermon on the Mount

Blessed are the humble, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for the shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirsty for justice, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall have mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peace maker, for they shall be called the sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men reproach you and persecute you and speak against you every kind of evil,
for my sake,
Then be glad and rejoice, for your reward is increased in heaven; in this very manner they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Simple Prayer of St. Nicolas of Flue

My lord and my God
Take everything from me
That keeps me far from thee
My lord and my God
Give everything to me
That brings me nearer to thee
My lord and my God
Take me away from myself
And give me completely to thee

Prayer of the Virgin of Guadeloupe

Oh, Immaculate Virgin, Mother of compassion, to you we concentrate ourselves, our love, our life, our work, our happiness, our sickness, our pain.
For the peace, justice and prosperity of our people, grant our homes with the grace of love, protect our families and the education of our children.
Look upon us with compassion and grant us love and peace upon
our consciences for our father Jesus Christ, which with God and the Holy Spirit, live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Adopted from John Paul ll

The White Eagle Teaching

“O dear God, give, give, give! Give me health, give me happiness, give me the necessities, give me all I want, dear God, and I will do what you want,” instead say, ‘”Dear Father, beloved Christ, I give myself to Thee; do with me as Thou wilt.”
Saint Michael Prayer
O Blessed Michael, Archangel, Thou Holy One of God.
Bless and protect this Thy domain,
Thou, who art the Dispenser of Truth and Justice,
Transmute all forces of evil, within and without.
And so hasten the Christ’s kingdom,
We ask it in His Name.
